Caretta Firmware Updates

Modified on Thu, 18 Jun at 4:56 PM

Caretta contains additional circuitry not found on casual tablets, especially MCU for communicating with the Cradle and ensuring CAN bus and RS485 connectivity.

It is essential to keep firmware for these components up-to-date.

Updates to the firmware are NOT deployed as part of the operating system updates and are distributed via NGH.

Why are the firmware updates not part of the operating system updates? Because firmware packages are a few kilobytes and it would be wasteful to update whole operating system (2GB of data) because of that.

The firmware updates are installed through NGH Settings - Caretta setup - bottom of the page. Internet connection is necessary for the updates to be checked and downloaded:

Starting at NGH version 1.29, you will be notified about available firmware updates by a notification and in-app pop-up.

NGH is updated via Google Play store. Please keep NGH updated (find NGH on Google Play store - if an update is avalable, the Play store will offer the option "Update").

The firmware update process is broken down into 2 phases:

  1. updating firmware in the components on the Caretta mainboard (when update is applied via NGH). This process requires user action as described above.
  2. updating firmware in the MCU inside the Cradle electronics (when Caretta is placed in the Cradle for the first time after step 1). This process is automatic.

When you place Caretta in the Cradle after the update, you will experience a gap for about 20 seconds in power delivery and communication with external systems (during the update Caretta is not powered, BMW Wonderwheel or bike digital dashboard will not work). Normal function is resumed automatically after the firmware update process completes (about 20 seconds).
