When you insert SD card into CI Pad, you get 2 options - use the card as extra internal storage or use the card as portable:
It is NOT recommended to setup the card as extra phone storage. It will prevent the use of the card after operating system update, Factory Reset and/or after ejecting the card. The only solution in those situations is performing Factory Reset of CI Pad and re-formatting the card, which will result in loss of all personal data stored on CI Pad and the SD card.
Before you do operating system update, perform Factory Reset or eject the SD card formatted as extra phone storage, you must back-up all your personal data that you do not want to loose (cloud storage, your computer or move the data to internal CI Pad storage) AND following that reformate the SD card as portable (which is very simple - check below).
How can you tell, if your SD card is formatted for extra phone storage or as portable? Keep reading:-)
Go to the system Settings - Storage and click on the SD card to reveal details.
This is how it looks on Android 11, when SD card is formatted for extra storage - there is just name of the card (there is no description of the card being portable), there are some extra folders for System and Apps and when you click on the 3 dots top right corner, you get an option to format it as portable:

To convert the card from internal storage to external, all you need to do is click on the SD card - click 3 dots top right - select the option Format as portable (remember to back-up the data stored on the card before you do - all will be wiped clean):
