Hardware Best Practices: What to Avoid

The general guideline is to avoid subjecting the CI Pad to conditions or handling you would not expose a standard smartphone to (with the exception of mounting it to your motorcycle). While the CI Pad is a ruggedized device, improper electrical connections, thermal stress, and environmental extremes can cause permanent hardware damage.

1. Avoid Unpowered Connections (Reverse Current Risk)

Do not leave the CI Pad connected to a power source that is not actively receiving power.

Connecting the CI Pad to an unpowered source—such as a wall adapter unplugged from the mains socket, an unpowered motorcycle circuit, or a laptop that has shut down—can induce reverse current. This draws power from the CI Pad back into the connected device, rapidly draining and potentially damaging the battery even overnight from a full charge.

2. Do Not Use USB Quick Chargers

Do not use USB Quick Charge (QC) or high-voltage fast chargers via the USB port.

High-voltage/quick-charge protocols risk blowing the internal protection fuse on the USB port, which results in a complete loss of USB functionality (charging and data connectivity). If your device charges properly via the motorcycle mount but fails to charge via the USB port, a blown fuse is the most probable cause.

3. Direct Sunlight on Stationary Motorcycles (Thermal Overheating)

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when the motorcycle is stationary.

Without the cooling airflow provided while riding, intense solar radiation can cause excessive internal heat buildup, damaging the battery and internal electronics. Long-term exposure to direct sunlight and UV can also reduce LCD lifespan and cause display bleaching (discoloration or tinting). When parking, remove the CI Pad or cover it to shield it from direct sunlight.

4. Sub-Zero Temperatures with Depleted Batteries

Do not leave the CI Pad in sub-zero (°C) temperatures with a depleted battery.

A depleted lithium battery exposed to freezing conditions can suffer irreversible cell failure. However, operating the CI Pad in sub-zero temperatures while riding is safe provided the unit is actively connected to power, as charging current and display operation generate sufficient heat to maintain safe internal temperatures.
