Caretta CAN Bus Integration & Bike Telemetry (Experimental)

Starting with Next-Gen Hub (NGH) v1.35, Caretta introduces simplified interface for direct CAN bus vehicle connectivity, allowing your device to read real-time engine and motorcycle telemetry directly from your bike's onboard systems to populate NGH Widgets and overlays.

Because motorcycle manufacturers use proprietary, non-standardized CAN bus protocols across different models and generations, CAN bus decoding is an active, ongoing development initiative.

Prerequisites & Setup

  • Software Requirement: NGH App updated to v1.33 or higher.
  • Caretta firmware Requirement: v57 and up.
  • Hardware Requirement: Caretta device docked in the Cradle and connected via Carpe Iter OBD adaptor cable to the diagnostic socket on a powered vehicle.

How to Enable CAN Bus Connectivity

  1. Open the NGH App.
  2. Navigate to Settings → Caretta Setup.
  3. Toggle on CAN Bus Connectivity.

Experimental Feature Status: CAN Bus connectivity is currently marked as Experimental while we expand our bike database and refine data filtering. Enabling this feature is 100% safe for your motorcycle (Caretta operates in a read-only state for vehicle telemetry). Occasional glitches in CAN bus traffic decoding cannot be excluded in the current development phase.

Currently Supported Motorcycles

Caretta currently supports real-time telemetry decoding on the following motorcycle platforms:

  • EURO 4 Models: KTM and Husqvarna multicylinder bikes (e.g., 790 / 1090 / 1190 / 1290 series). (Single-cylinder EURO 4 models are not currently supported and the support will come in form a future software update.)
  • EURO 5 Models: KTM, Husqvarna, and GasGas models (including single-cylinder platforms like the 690 / 701 / 700 series).

Special Feature: KTM EURO 4 Race Dongle Emulation

For EURO 4 KTM and Husqvarna multicylinder models, Caretta includes a built-in Race Dongle Emulation feature. This software feature emulates the official KTM physical Race Dongle, allowing off-road riders to permanently disable ABS without it resetting every time the ignition is turned off.

⚠️ Important Note on Current Race Dongle Behavior: In the current release, the Race Dongle emulation command is sent via software during an active NGH session. If Caretta is removed from its cradle or undergoes a system restart, the emulation state may not immediately persist across ignition cycles.

Coming Soon: In an upcoming firmware update (releasing in a few weeks), this command will be baked directly into the Caretta onboard CAN Microcontroller (MCU). Once flashed, ABS will automatically be disabled the instant Caretta connects to the bike's electrical system.

Roadmap: Upcoming Bike Support

We are actively capturing and decoding log files for additional adventure and dual-sport platforms. Our development roadmap for the coming weeks includes:

  • In Active Development (EURO 5 - 50% Complete): Yamaha Tenere 700 (T700), Ducati Multistrada, Ducati DesertX.
  • Next Stage (EURO 4): Yamaha Tenere 700 (T700 EURO 4).
  • Next Stage (EURO 5): Aprilia Tuareg 660, Kove 800X / 450 Rally, CFMOTO 800MT series.

Troubleshooting & Community Decoding Initiative

No Data Showing in Widgets After Enabling CAN Bus?

If you have enabled CAN bus connectivity in Settings → Caretta Setup but no engine telemetry (RPM, coolant temperature, gear indicator, etc.) appears on the NGH bike dashboard or in the NGH Widgets, it simply means your specific motorcycle model or firmware generation is not yet in our decoding database.
