You can accidentally turn off the Carpe controller app by touching the accessibility symbol next to the "back", "home" and "open apps" buttons. If you are using a device with a navigation bar, then you might have this feature linked to a gesture, or a combined button press. If your controls suddenly stop working, it is most probably because of this.
This feature can be useful though. Disabling the controller app can increase your battery life.
