Charging on the bike cuts out

Modified on Wed, 5 Jun at 3:18 PM

If your charging is cutting out mid ride, and you have a Black power source, then the issue may be with your alternator. This can happen either due to a bad alternator, or because you have too many powered accessories on at the same time.

The black power source only switches on around ~13V on the battery. If the alternator is struggling to provide enough power, the voltage on the battery can fluctuate between over 13V when the power source is off, and under 13V after it switches on and the CI Pad starts charging, which can then turn the power source off again.

Raising the rpm of your engine should resolve the issue, but a bad alternator might just need replacing.

This video shows the problem nicely, the power source is on (green light in the bottom right) CI Pad starts charging. Once the default charging icon disappears and the battery percentage shows up, the power source light turns off for a second, the CI Pad turns off and then the power source turns on again, and the cycle repeats.
